Generally speaking, non-Londoners aren't terribly enamoured with our great city. They complain about the pollution, the public transport and the supposed general air of "unfriendliness". (Hey, ever tried living in Paris?) Yet despite all that, they keep coming: a new survey reports that London's population has risen by more than half a million people in the last decade, most of whom are arrivals from abroad. London is a tough city — it chews up and spits out the most delicate souls — but the rewards are great for those who stick around and call it home. No matter how long you've been here, though, do us all a favour: leave that Mockney accent at home.

Having ensconced themselves in the woodwork of the Big Chill House not too long ago, Hooked on Music hand-pluck an array of artists who tick all the right boxes for this fortnightly residency, with sounds ranging from folk to electronica and all that lies between. Playing tonight are Mancunians These Eyes Are Cameras, whose influences are drawn from indie-pop sensibilities — yet somehow incorporate a mandolin, flugelhorn and violin. Alt-country comes in the form of My First Tooth, while the Whole Schebang and MASA complete the satisfying bill.

Join the Big Ideas group for a cerebral workout at the Wheatsheaf. Tonight's topic of discussion, "Is being rational the same as being logical?", has been put forward by Wilfrid Hodges, a professorial fellow of mathematics at Queen Mary College, University of London. To shed light on this conundrum, he draws on his esteemed academic career in the realms of algebra and logic, as well as on the work of Charles Sanders Peirce, a genius logician who posed the very same question more than a hundred years ago. No mathematical knowledge whatsoever is required, and the bar is at hand for those that need an extra kick to stimulate the grey cells.

Pangolin Gallery's inaugural exhibition kicks off with new works by sculptor Peter Randall-Page, inspired by the mystical rock gongs the artist found on a visit to Uganda's Lolui Island on Lake Victoria. There, Randall-Page teamed up with the London Sinfonietta, who digitally recorded the sonorous tolling of the concave rocks. During some evenings of the exhibition, they perform that musical interpretation at the Kings Place concert hall, bringing the magic of the ancient gongs to London.

Concrete and Glass is an art/music jamboree curated by EYOE's Tom Baker and roaming gallery curator Flora Fairbairn. Among the ludicrously large selection of cutting-edge musicians, undiscovered artists and established names are bespectacled Glaswegian math rockers Errors, Brooklyn experimentalists Telepathe and Heart of Glass. To top it off, an open art competition is held in the basement of Shoreditch Town Hall.

The Mau5trap label party, with Canadian producer Deadmau5 heading the bill, is one of the many stellar line-ups at Matter — the brand-new sister venue of well-established superclub Fabric — an impressive 2,600-capacity space with a high-tech soundsystem, right under the O2 Arena dome. Not only is Deadmau5 the label's founder, but he's also a dab hand at DJing, famous for energetic sets that range from progressive house to nu-trance, punctuated by the occasional anthemic riff. Meanwhile, electro and techno action comes from Australia's PNAU and Scottish DJ/producer Chris Lake.

Former NME snapper Chris Clunn has spent the past 25 years recording the lives of ordinary — and often extraordinary — Londoners going about their business, from auto-spares men to Evening Standard sellers and the infamous bummarees (porters at Smithfield market). Now that many of Clunn's favorite characters no longer exist, these black-and-white images provide fascinating insight into bygone times, when the capital was populated with Pearly Kings and Queens, rag-and-bone men and accordion players.

Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander stages a characteristically magical show at the South London Gallery. In line with her inventive use of found objects and interior space, Neuenschwander's site-specific Suspension Point cuts right through the gallery's main exhibition room, dividing it into two floors. On the upper storey sit enchanted microcosms — piles of dust from mountainous lands, a projection that creates an array of 1,001 moons and water droplets that fall into a lake, mimicking rainfall. Meanwhile, on the floor below, visitors are encouraged to negotiate the temporary wooden scaffolding that intrudes into the white space, now almost devoid of light.

A walk through the streets of La Paz, Bolivia, reveals a staggering number of homeless shoe-shine boys wearing ski masks to protect their dignity. Photographer Phil Clarke-Hill spent time working for community newspaper Hormigón Armado ("Reinforced Concrete"), which operates similarly to The Big Issue — the boys sell copies to supplement their shoe-shine income. Clarke-Hill's portraits of lustrabotas at work are on display alongside copies of the paper in order to raise awareness of their plight.

Techno night and underground record label Süd Electronic celebrates eight years at the electronic-music coalface with an anniversary bash at a former cinema space in Dalston. Detroit's Scott Ferguson and Berlin minimal-techno producer Prosumer test the art-deco building's structural integrity with some seriously deep and chugging grooves, while residents Lakuti and Nick Craddock make full use of a specially installed Funktion 1 sound system and Valero Doval transforms the venue with an array of eye-popping visuals.

A somewhat self-explanatory bookend to weekends London-wide, the Anything Goes Sunday Club invades the Star this evening. Hosted by Miss Hatty, this is a blank canvas for those with talent and those with, erm, enthusiasm. Whether your forte lies in comedy, music, film or spoken word, the stage gapes wide for one and all. Those interested in participating are advised to hit up the Anything Goes MySpace page in advance or simply turn up prepared. Less forthcoming souls can kick back and take in the improvisational madness.

Part of this year's Dance Umbrella festival, Stupid Men sees bad boy of dance Nigel Charnock take to the stage in an explosive piece of purely improvised physical theatre. Joined by Adrian Howells, Mike Winter and Itay Yatuv, Charnock blends raw energy and provocative movements with an inquisitive take on masculinity and the male form. Blurring many boundaries and social constructs, the four dancers reinterpret — in their own free-for-all fashion — what it means to be a man, an exercise spiked with plenty of wry wit along the way.

Australian artist Ben Frost displays mash-ups of consumer society in his first solo UK exhibition, presented by nascent arts collective No Walls. Fascinated with the materials of capitalism, Frost takes on the slap-a-logo-on-anything nature of our contemporary "crapitalist" world and seeks to destroy it with its own weapons. Be prepared for uncomfortable collage juxtapositions of Hello Kitty and Napalm Death, as Frost links the icons with grotesque blood-stained scenarios.

The "literature" of Jackie Collins hasn't been the inspiration for many artworks, but London video artist Sarah Baker draws on her bonkbuster Studs for her latest film installation. Rather bizarrely, it features legendary Cherokee actor Wes Studi, male synchronised swimmer Bill May and Baker herself in a tale of relationships, exploitation and avarice, filmed in Vegas and Santa Fe.
