Once a take-your-life-in-your-hands, unmarked bar of dodgy permit status, Mandrake is the earliest bellwether of the changes wrought by the influx of posh galleries in Culver City. Its arts-minded partners renovated the digs, carving out not only a private patio and cozy interior with crisp, conceptual cocktails (the Garden Martini is the closest thing to a Pimm's Cup you can get this side of the pond) and tasty snacks, but also a project room perfectly appointed for the gallery-style exhibitions, performances, screenings, and book parties that now take place almost nightly.
