Anton Henning's loopy abstractions, painterly portraits, and grandiose furniture are loveable yet curiously familiar. Consuming broad swathes of modernism from Manet to Mondrian to late minimalism, Henning gleefully regurgitates the aesthetic pleasures of the previous century and a half, minus the polemics and political strife. The work (and its presentation) almost veers into kitsch, but remains strangely titillating.
