From the horrific to the mythic, Sue de Beer's video installations unravel twisted paths into the sputtering darkness of adolescence. Her protagonists appear alternately incandescent, tormented, and transfigured by love. Telling stories that spark cognitive dissonance by creating images of awkward youth and then placing language of fire and brimstone in her creations' mouths, the artist explores big-picture concerns like war and death through a prism of emotion, the horror of children's fairy tales, and the physicality of her teenaged actors. Set like theatrical jewels in a contrived "high school play," her characters act as allegories for the discomfiting, confusing, and, ultimately, transcendent nature of life at any age.
