Exhibitions addressing mythologies of Southern California are suddenly seemingly ubiquitous. The Orange County Museum of Art's Art Since the 1960s: California Experiments historicizes the "evolution" of postwar art, while the Hammer's Eden's Edge offered a multigenerational meditation on craft by artists working in and around Los Angeles. In this vein, LACMA's SoCal is a nuanced study of regional art from the 1960s and 70s. Drawing from the museum's permanent collection, the exhibition offers an array of artistic media ranging from assemblage to painting, rendering a vision of vibrancy and promise from a distant and long-lost Los Angeles.
