Art Project Series 34: Iva Gueorguieva

Victor Hugo once said that, in contrast to the sublime, the grotesque is the richest material that nature can offer art. Iva Gueorguieva heeds Hugo's words, fashioning wall-sized paintings laden with thickly rendered, sickly hued detail. Gueorguieva's works embody the hybridized and occasionally terrifying experience of contemporary life, brazenly splicing landscapes, figures, architectural elements, and pure abstraction into visceral visual metaphors. The entire show could be read as a subversive, punkish statement, were it not for the artist's firm grasp of art history and obvious empathy for the vagaries of the human condition.
