The lowrider tradition originated in the Chicano barrios of Los Angeles, inspired by a fierce love for classic cars and the need for expressing cultural identity. Chopping, dropping, pin-striping, and gold-plating vintage automobiles is integral to the history of Mexican American culture and, by association, our city itself, where these practices gained international renown. This exhibition documents the integration of art, design, and function that informs urban landscapes the world over, highlighting one of LA's most critical contributions to global, social, and cultural history.
