Note: An opening reception takes place Fri Nov 16 (7-9pm), preceded by a talk with the artist and critic Jan Tumlir (6-7pm).
A Spanish artist who decamped to LA, Adrià Julià is a CalArts grad with a knack for telling unusual stories. Last year at the Orange County Museum of Art, Julià showed La Villa Basque, Vernon, California, a film about the city of Vernon, population 91, five miles east of downtown. In the black-and-white 16mm film A Means of Passing the Time, Julià reanimates the folk tradition of mummery, in which a theatre troupe shows up at a public place unannounced and performs. The stars of the film are two USO entertainers, whose regular job is to provide entertainment to our troops abroad by setting up in foreign bases and creating impromptu spectacles.
