Sister Cities
Friday Nov 16, 2007 (8pm–midnight)

On June 27, 1967, Los Angeles and Berlin became sister cities — and oceanic possibilities for creative conversation loomed large. Forty years later, this three-night program of film couplets celebrates the landmark cultural exchange. Each Berlin-based artist-in-residence (of the estimable Villa Aurora) is paired with a Los Angeles counterpart to screen selected works, from documentaries to experimental dalliances. As artists like Werner Herzog, John Baldessari, and Maya Deren do the honors, the duos' true affinities are brilliantly illuminated. Tonight, Herzog's sublime The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner is screened along with Deren's Rituals in Transfigured Time, among others.
