Renny Pritikin is a rare treasure in the world of fine art: a high-level scholar and curator with a keen, prescient eye for spotting pop-culture diamonds in the rough and bringing them the attention of the museum world. In his various roles as New Langton Arts director, Yerba Buena Center chief curator, and director of the UC Davis Nelson Gallery, he invites iconic outsiders to the fine-art table — for example, Don Ed Hardy, Syd Mead, and Big Daddy Roth. Tonight, he discusses the Hammer Museum's current show Extraordinary Exhibitions: Broadsides from the Collections of Ricky Jay, a compendium of fascinating and colorful playbills of early-20th-century freakshows, wonderments, zoos, and happenings that, as one might imagine, have captured Pritikin's fertile imagination.
