New Beverly Cinema says…

Within Woody Allen's comic cosmology, there's the Sun (Annie Hall, 1977), orbiting planets (Manhattan, 1979), and space-junk (Celebrity, 1998), but in between float some neglected gems. Stardust Memories finds Allen's self-absorbed director at a seaside getaway, stranded with his usual array of neuroses and witticisms. Like Fellini's freewheelers, the film is full of eccentrics, transportation-as-entrapment, lovely women, and the hunt for meaning. Meanwhile, the Purple Rose of Cairo is a transcendent ode to Allen's first love (cinema), starring his then-love (Mia Farrow) as a Depression-era, daydreaming waitress whose reality becomes reel romanticism when Hollywood hunk Jeff Daniels steps offscreen and comes to life.
