Landmark Nuart Theatre says…

In the early 1950s, cinemagician Albert Lamorisse created a new French board game, The Conquest of the World — or, for Americans, Risk. Concurrently, he created two other all-ages allegories: The Red Balloon and White Mane. Both short films are microscopic rather than macroscopic by design, and relish in their all-win arithmetic and enchanting elegance. The ethereal, Palme d'Or-charmed Red Balloon is a near-wordless optimist's ode to friendship, following a boy and his new pal, a peppy red balloon, during their magical meander through the Parisian Menilmontant neighborhood. With equal economy, White Mane captures the obstacle-overcoming love between Folco the trainer and the titular, untamable stallion.
