Much has been made of Matthew Dear's recent shape-shift from minimal techno artiste to inscrutable, loved-up pop vocalist — but really, his Asa Breed resists reductionist, techno-star-goes-pop interpretations, and pretty much evades genre altogether. While they feature catchy vocals and melodies aplenty, Dear's new "songs" are strange, winding roads of subverted structure and Afrobeat-via-Eno rhythmic experimentation, and you can most definitely still dance to them. Dear DJs tonight alongside Dirtybird Records founder Claude VonStroke, a bearded bear of a man whose hits "The Whistler" and "Who's Afraid of Detroit?" have earned him a reputation as the fartiest man in techno (bass-wise).
