Frequenting Beat and Bebop camps with equal ease, Harry Smith was the quintessential San Francisco experimental artist — adamantly atypical, crucially conceptual, and always awash with big ideas. Tonight, REDCAT offers a rare glimpse of the bohemian's filmic talents. His "arc" of numerated, 16mm animations are hand-painted perfections buttressed by synaesthetic associations, superimpositions, and symbol-laden collages. Featured here are his Early Abstractions, accompanied by live music, as well as his Films Nos. 14-17. Film No. 16, most interestingly, is a fragment of his aborted reworking of The Wizard of Oz.
