A whispery-voiced man with a guitar, José González writes songs that are soothingly seductive. His original compositions are as gentle as courtly flirtation or rain on the sidewalk — both foreign to this city — but what puts him above the crowd of contemporary crooners is his knack for innovative cover selections. Most notable among these are his wistful rendition of the Knife's "Heartbeats" and the compelling (bongo-infused!) version of Massive Attack's "Teardrop." In González's case, it may not be sacrilegious to say that the remake bests the original.
