Carrying on the tradition of Polish provocateur Jerzy Grotowski, Teatr Zar's members alter the notion of theatre through acts of deeply personal communal ritual. Zar's performers draw profound feeling from their raw, introspective process, provoking a spiritual transformation in the audience with what, in many ways, resembles a religious mass. Gospels utilizes text, movement, chants, and ancient liturgical songs from the Republic of Georgia to create a delicate, deeply nuanced ceremony that explores the space between the worlds of the living and the dead.
