A genre-bending thriller, Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1982) was among the first French films to herald the Cinéma du Look — the glossy, style-conscious movement that favored aesthetics over content. A ferociously '80s film — in clothes, hairdos, and zeitgeist — the gritty and grandiose tale stars Jules, a Parisian postman and passionate fan of opera idol Cynthia Hawkins. Jules' trouble begins with two tapes: the first an illegal recording of the previously unrecorded Hawkins; the second a leak that reveals a police racket. With a cast including corrupt cops, Taiwanese record pirates, and a deus-ex-machina playboy, the film, 25 years later, is still a kinetic knockout of trauma and tenderness.
