Whether anger, irreverence, or strategy motivates Glenn Ligon's paintings and neon wall-works is open for debate. He grafts racially and sexually charged text onto rarefied idioms of conceptual art and non-traditional industrial materials, creating an awkward, pregnant atmosphere of parody and pleasure, whose implications linger long after the understated visuals fade. Tonight, Ligon lectures at the Hammer in conjunction with an ongoing exhibition of his work at Regen Projects.
