Aero Theatre says…

Anarchist, pseudo-scientist, and experimental filmmaker Jean Painlevé viewed underwater life with a strange, fantastical eye, and his camera gave birth to a unique genre of poetic documentary. The curious precursor to Cousteau, Painlevé produced jazz-scored shorts that, while biological in nature, are anything but banal — Painlevé's strange passions animate his marine subjects in surprisingly lascivious ways. Tonight's 71 minutes of delirious, deep-sea explorations feature several iterations of salty, suggestive sea creatures, including The Sea Horse, with its male sea horse giving birth; The Sea Urchins, with its spiny characters' dreamy routines; and Love Life of the Octopus, with its titular stars' sex-lectric and beautiful undulations.
