Despite a penchant for more-absurdist-than-thou lyrics and off-kilter instrumentation, neo-prog folksters the Decemberists are actually pretty populist — courting landlords' daughters, barrow boys, and indie-pop fans alike. Singer Colin Meloy doubles as master of lore, weaving thickly descriptive, thoroughly fetching fables as accordions meet gurgling guitars, organ fills, military-style percussion, and folksy strings. In the past, it's all seemed a little precious, but with the release of 2006's The Crane Wife, the band proved it's possible to weave obscure references while simultaneously reveling in the rawk.
