The Fusion festival celebrates ethnically and sexually diverse themes in new cinema by up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world. This year's queer party boasts eight feature-length films and 17 shorts, many of which are included in Friday night's Opening Gala Screening of Short Films. On the bill: Dee Rees' award-winning, 29-minute Pariah, the tale of a lesbian teenager's descent into duplicity, and Indian filmmaker Soman Chainani's Kali Ma, an affecting short about an Indian mother who goes after her gay son's bullies. Also a must-see is Priscilla Brasil's The Daughters of Chiquita, a riveting full-length documentary about a Brazilian gay-pride parade held during the city of Belem's largest Catholic celebration.
