Whether reading between the lines or blurring them entirely, ubiquitous designer Shepard Fairey mines the deep vein of irony running through the American dream. Though his failure to attribute the origins of a great many of his historical image sources (like mid-century Eastern European propaganda) has touched off a small controversy among anti-pomo purists, his innumerable paintings, posters, prints, stickers, books, magazines, and commercial jobs clearly strike a nerve. Imperfect Union is the largest exhibition of new work by Fairey in ages.
