Los Angeles County Museum of Art says…

In 1944, Alfred Hitchcock intuited that Salvador Dalí's penchant for precisely rendered images of the impossible embodied a dreamlike mindstate better than the prevailing cinematic shorthand of wavy lines and shifting focus. The director thereby commissioned the mustachioed surrealist to create the celebrated dream sequence in the otherwise straightforward (for Hitchcock) Spellbound. The film itself is signature Hitchcock: a murder mystery with fallen men and fallible femmes. Love blooms while Gregory Peck, a suspected-of-murder amnesiac, and Ingrid Bergman, a prudish, Freudian psychiatrist, try to decipher the former's identity in a minefield of passion, suspicion, and gorgeous cinematography.
