The first "rock-horror exploitation musical," as screenwriter Rogert Ebert crowed, female-fanatic Russ Meyer's hypersexual Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is a decadent, drugged-out fever dream about Kelly, Casey, and Petronella's '60s quest for rock success. What the hip, buxom bandmates find in the Los Angeles of this campy pleasure are raging parties, lascivious ladies, and rapacious types. Meanwhile, the Monkees star in their own alt-culture classic, Head, which absolutely and psychedelically punishes their prepackaged, popular image. The hodgepodge of Monkee-made merriment features absurd sights gags, musical numbers, and comical cameos including co-writer Jack Nicholson.
