Expressionist émigré Fritz Lang's American output is unjustly regarded with less esteem than his German masterworks, but these later products (minor Lang, if you will) remain germane to his filmic fixation on humanity's darkest depths. In Secret Beyond the Door — the last of four collaborations with Joan Bennett — Lang reimagines the Bluebeard story as a disturbed, dream-coated noir. Bennett, in an inspired reversal of her femme-fatale fame, is a reckless heiress who weds a handsome man (Michael Redgrave) in Mexico. Her honeymoon, however, turns horrifying with the realization that her main man is a woman-hating maniac whose home features seven rooms with a murderous history, including an unsettlingly locked one.
