Aero Theatre says…

Antiwar auteur Andrzej Wajda's three-part study of wartime Poland's ruin and reclamation culminates in its hypnotic hypotenuse, Ashes and Diamonds. Somewhere in Poland on the last day of World War II, Zbigniew Cybulski is assigned to assassinate a carpetbagging communist, but en route encounters a beautiful barmaid offering a life of love. A black-and-white gem with a cri de coeur ending, the atmospheric masterwork captures a human footnote amidst the historical enormity. Screening alongside is Wajda's fearless "Solidarity" film, Man of Marble, which tracks a student's searing cinematic study of a national hero's disappearance. Innovatively examining art and propaganda's problematic coexistence, it infuses a night of Polish concerns with universal connotations.
