Art Watch It Happen: Up Close

Like all great ideas, the inspiration behind the activities of progressive-art-and-design outfit Eco-Logical Gallery was a simple binary realization: discarded billboards hurt the environment, and artist materials are expensive. Thus, years of innovative painting production and exhibition strategies kicked off. The outdoor-advertising industry donates huge pieces of printed vinyl, and dozens of painters transform them into hybrid compositions that often merge not only visual styles (digital printing, hand-painted intervention), but also cultural idioms of commerce, race, language and sexuality. In preparation for January's citywide outdoor exhibition of reclaimed vinyl, the gallery is open on Saturdays and Sundays in December, allowing members of the public to come and catch the artists in the creative act.
