Matthew Barney, iconic multimedia rainmaker and Björk's baby daddy, shows drawings relating to his newest multimedia work, Guardian of the Veil. The film documents a series of performances Barney gave in his Queens studio in April. Essentially, it deconstructs and engineers in recombinant form narrative and symbolic elements from his own maximalist, orgiastic Cremaster 3 and the late, great Norman Mailer's haunting novel Ancient Evenings — about a man whose story begins with his death. Photographs from Cremaster 3 are included to refresh your memory; the related drawings are pencil on black paper with petroleum, promising a surreal, uneasy aesthetic ambiguity, and a rich array of lusciously rendered compositions that don't make a bit of sense.
