With a brilliant juxtaposition of traditional method and modern subject, Chinese artist Xu Hualing's paintings take over this West Hollywood gallery with two series of her delicately powerful work. While her technique of watercolor-on-silk is centuries old, Hualing keeps her work current by illustrating images of women as strong yet sexual beings. While the choice of subject was influenced by comics, kung fu films, and other pop culture that dominated the time in which the young artist was growing up, her aesthetic is soft and muted, with an almost antiqued appearance.
