The Coen brothers and pre-Spidey Sam Raimi are among American cinema's greatest genre ghosts, at ease in each of their eclectic endeavors. Tonight's two colossi of 1987 cult, Raising Arizona and Evil Dead II, provide playful evidence of their virtuosity. The Coens' riotous slapstick exercise revolves around ex-small-time-crook H.I. McDonnough (Nicholas Cage) and his ex-cop wife, following their adventures of aversion after kidnapping one of furniture king Nathan Arizona's quintuplets. With equal élan, Raimi's hysterically funny and inspired film functions as a revved-up remake and sequel of nonstop style. Stop-motion monstrosities and possessed anatomy populate the gory affair, as the heroic Ash attempts to survive the onslaught of the dead, again.
