Tonight two winsome wellsprings of childhood return to the screen for some lighthearted distraction. Walt Disney's musical Mary Poppins (1964) headlines the holiday affair, starring Dame Julie Andrews as the pitch-perfect nanny and Dick Van Dyke as a boisterous chimney sweep. In the whimsical adaptation of P.L. Travers' childrens' books, Mary turns the hooligan Banks children into improbable angels with her magical adventures. Besides the endearing song-and-dance, the dynamic integration of exquisite animation and surreal setups creates a visual experience even adults can enjoy. Completing the nostalgic night are six sprightly Looney Tunes animations from 1953.
