Inimitable critic Manny Farber praised writer/director Preston Sturges for destroying the "image of Americans as tight-lipped Hemingwayan creatures who converse in grating monosyllables and chopped sentences." Tonight, a three-hour trove of Sturges' disarmingly charming and clever exchanges can be sampled from two scathing satires, Sullivan's Travels and Hail the Conquering Hero. The bare bones of these seriocomic features find Joel McCrea playing a fed-up film director out to comprehend the hoi polloi firsthand, and a hay-feverish Eddie Bracken bravely becoming a reputed war hero in his hometown return. Saturated with Sturges' rich and eccentric supporting players, the films combine self-aware slapstick and prescient social commentary with unrivaled virtuosity.
