Highways Performance Space says…

LA-based live theatre group Artel stages and supports interdisciplinary works of performance art illuminating and exploring the rich, and often misunderstood, legacy of 20th-century Russian culture. Mikhail Bulgakov (1917-1940) is in many ways like the Rimbaud of his time and place: he was an incendiary literary talent who attracted scandal, died young, and wove symbolism and politics into buoyant and inscrutably jovial tales that embraced the dysfunctional but elegant zeitgeist of his surroundings. And, in the end, he's best known in the West for a single iconic work — the best-selling novel of post-Soviet magic realism The Master and Margarita. Artel's innovative production explores not the content of this work itself, but rather the turbulent times that gave rise to it.
