Despite the fame of giants Roman Polanski and Krzysztof Kieslowski, the deep roots of modern Polish cinema run to Andrzej Wajda. Since his 1955 film A Generation — starring the Polish James Dean, Zbigniew Cybulski — Wajda has addressed Poland's peerless artistic history from the World Wars through Soviet rule to the present day, all with an unflinching focus on his compatriots' fight for freedom and survival. For his anxiously anticipated Katyn, which grapples with the Soviet massacre of Polish officers during WWII, Wadja augments his knowledge of the era by drawing from personal history (his own father was a murdered cavalry officer). Deftly interweaving authentic accounts and intense circumstances, the narrative threads follow four families through their individual experiences of tragedy.
