Forget Wii, kid-sized Escalades, and paintball guns. Atwater Village's Black Maria Gallery shares its nostalgia (and collector's fetish) for old-time toys with Sadly Beautiful, a contemporary re-imagining of classic vinyl playthings. The group show, which features dozens of artists, including Mr. Atom, Rhinomilk, Glory Tsui, and Lou Pimentel, presents fantastical, modern-day versions of yesteryear playthings, conjuring the haunted childhood dreams of Gen-Xers everywhere. The unique, vinyl-only exhibition is sentimental, quirky, and utterly imaginative.
