Henry Darger
Saturday Dec 8, 2007 (7pm)
Directions: The Egyptian Theatre is just east of Highland Avenue between Las Palmas Avenue and McCadden Place. Metro Stop: Hollywood & Highland

Henry Darger was a workaday janitor and watercolor virtuoso who translated his lonesome life into a lushly illustrated, 15,000-page epic, In the Realms of the Unreal, about a religious war between the virtuous Vivian Girls and the child-enslaving Glandelinian army. Jessica Yu's documentary of the same name paints an evocative portrait of Darger's art and existence, animating his magnificent murals of girls with animal and male appendages. Two of Yu's award-winning shorts supplement the Darger immersion: Sour Death Balls candidly captures first reactions to the unsavory sweet, while Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien offers an intimate portrait of the paralyzed, iron-lunged writer.
