Film Old Boy

At once violent and sensitive, the watershed film Old Boy attracted both acclaim and fury while shifting attention to South Korean cinema. Chan-wook Park's second segment from his vengeance trilogy is a visceral symphony of incest, plot twists, and spiritual depletion. A simultaneously monstrous and ordinary machismo informs the tale of husband and dad Dae-su, who is imprisoned for 15 years by an unknown individual, then abruptly set free, initiating the omnipotent orchestration of revenge. The film's knockout weight comes from its retrograde severity, a classic English tragedy set in Seoul.
