Art Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling

Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling is MCASD's response to MOCA's 2005 exhibition Visual Music, a survey of the influence and/or direct use of music in contemporary art. Dave Hickey-anointed wunderkind Tim Bavington paints rhythmic, polychrome paintings by dissecting songs and visually representing the notes and pauses; artist-cum-DJ and post-punk impresario Christian Marclay uses telephone rings and snippets of conversation to create a hypnotic soundtrack in Telephone; and Jean-Pierre Gauthier's Chants de travail is a network of sensors that play sounds when visitors enter the room.

– Justin Izbinski

Note: Selections from the exhibition remain on view through Sun May 4 08.
