Matthew Heller has stripped down his busy aesthetics for something more minimal, without straying from his trademark shadowy figures and text. Though at times pained and nostalgic, the overwhelming theme of his latest exhibition (his first at DCA) is the refreshing recognition that every experience, both joyful and sad, contributes to the ever-unfolding pattern of life. More revealing still is Heller's evolving craftsmanship, which further refines the turbulent connection between abstraction, narrative, chromatic restraint, and painterly expressivity.
