Film Knock on Any Door (1949)

To promote its promising upcoming exhibit, Bob Dylan's American Journey, 1956-1966, the Skirball is screening films that shaped Dylan's mercurial image. The first is the courtroom drama Knock on Any Door, directed by underdog champion Nicholas Ray. It's a slippery case of society versus the individual, in which disaffected, slum-dwelling youth Nick Romano (played by James Dean progenitor John Derek) is charged with murder and defended by Humphrey Bogart's empathetic lawyer. Even as Ray's rhetoric becomes heavy-handed, the film resonates with Nick's famous, restless philosophy: "Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse."
