Film Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Otto Preminger's masterpiece Anatomy of a Murder is a courtroom chess match in which each histrionic tactic becomes a piece of evidence for the careful viewer. Preminger's cynical reconstruction of a true-life Michigan case — concerning a barkeep murdered for allegedly raping a lieutenant's wife — is rife with deceit. James Stewart defends the overconfident officer on grounds of "irresistible impulse," while Preminger coaxes premium performances from George C. Scott as a silver-tongued prosecutor and Lee Remick as the alluring wife. Enhancing the battle is Duke Ellington's scintillating score, as well as scandalous references to sexual penetration and "panties."
