Film Laura (1944) and Advise and Consent (1962)

Otto Preminger directs one heckuva murder mystery. Laura hinges on a spellbinding turn by Gene Tierney as the film's obscure object of desire; the serpentine plot revolves around her "death," as a street-smart detective (Dana Andrews) investigates the high-society suspects, including a caustic columnist (Clifton Webb) and her fiancé (Vincent Price). Tierney also stars in tonight's second feature, Advise and Consent, a large-ensemble piece with ambitious scope in which political unrest flares after an alleged Communist is nominated Secretary of State.
