Film Northern Lights (1978)

Rob Nilsson and John Hanson's independent milestone Northern Lights features understated performances magnificently set against the wintry backdrop of early-century North Dakota. The plot springs from Henry Martinson's recollections of state radicalism circa 1915, when Ray Sorenson (Robert Behling) organized the Nonpartisan League as a measure against foreclosing banks. Woven into the struggle is a timid courtship and more meaningful moments of intimacy, from the simple (jokes and sung songs) to the strikingly poignant (a farmer's funeral). The film's serene, earthy beauty alone is worth the price of admission.
