Guy Maddin's Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary is a delicious mélange of blood, ballet, and bravura. Maddin finds the perfect venue for his expressionism and technical flair in Bram Stoker's famous novel. In a masterful translation of ballet to film, Maddin turns the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's refined rendition into a Mahler-scored cinematic opus. The black-and-white footage ignites with red at critical moments, spilling over with Victorian eroticism. Further contorting the classic narrative, Maddin surprises his audience with a dancing Asian Dracula (Zhang Wei-Qiang). Bursting out of its narrative bodice, Maddin's version is the most fascinating and fetching adaptation of the Count's escapades this side of Nosferatu.
