Dorothy Chandler Pavilion says…

Considered one of the world's greatest operas, Richard Wagner's 1857 Tristan und Isolde sprang from the composer's own torrid love life. Wagner composed the piece while exiled from Germany, during an extramarital liaison with a colleague's wife. His adaptation of the Arthurian romance tells a tale of two lovers, separated by politics and circumstance, who meet a tragic end. Initially hostile to each other, Tristan and Isolde accidentally share a love potion, and their acrimony turns to irrepressible obsession and eventual disaster. LA Opera's provocative rendition sizzles with sexuality against the backdrop of David Hockney's colorful and wildy imaginative sets.
