Appearing in He Ran All the Way, John Garfield demonstrated why he was considered the forerunner to the tongue-tied method actors. Garfield played dim and dangerous cop-killer Nick Robey — a character at odds with his emotions, oscillating between outright violence and deep vulnerability. After the law pinches his partner, Robey holds a damsel (Shelley Winters) and her family hostage, but she begins to fall for the paranoid fugitive. When the expected dragnet hems Robey in at their apartment, the film's dark psychological undercurrents are let loose. Unstable and mesmerizing emotional intensity courses through this compelling noir tale.
