Filmmaker's filmmaker Michael Powell was in a precarious fix in 1964, having been ostracized by the British film industry for his still-scandalous Peeping Tom (1960). Powell's West German television production Bluebeard's Castle, then, is a notable achievement, considering its unlikely roots. Adapting Béla Bartók's opera about the infamous 17th-century lady slayer, Bluebeard is an ornate, ominous creation with a striking brown-and-blue color scheme.
