Clerks, Kevin Smith's 1994 black-and-white landmark of low-budget impudence, still feels fresh in all its foulmouthed glory. Most of the famously dialogue-heavy film takes place at a New Jersey convenience store, where easygoing Dante, to his chagrin, has been left in charge on his day off. He and hilariously antagonistic buddy Randal, who staffs the video store next door, gab about Return of the Jedi, fellatio, and every eccentric customer they encounter, while taking breaks from their dead-end jobs for the occasional adventure. At first glance, the bracing slice-of-life narrative appears as simply a filmed forum for Smith's carping observations. But permeating the seemingly adolescent chatter is a keenness and honesty that the director has yet to recapture in later efforts.
