Renowned Japanese photographer Hiromi Tsuchida has trained his lens on facets of ordinary life throughout his lengthy career. Tsuchida's first solo exhibition in the US presents an enticing miniretrospective that covers three major projects. In Zokushin (Gods of the Earth), the artist photographed rural, largely agrarian people, particularly as they observed religious rituals and vernacular spiritual festivals. Counting Grains of Sand and New Counting Grains of Sand are both series of images that examine the movements of people in Japan's notoriously dense cities. Each image is a map of the intersection between the individual and the communal, within the global context of urbanization and consumerism.
