Los Angeles County Museum of Art says…

The Archers (aka legendary collaborators Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger) adapted Jacques Offenbach's classic opera Tales of Hoffmann in their typically grand style. With its bold colors, period detail, and feverish ballet dancing, the hyperstylized film follows the young poet Hoffmann as he recounts three tragic courtships in a series of color-coded episodes: yellow (with an evil Parisian automaton), red (with a soul-stealing Venetian courtesan), and blue (with a consumptive beloved in Greece). Despite the string of disappointing romances, Powell and Pressburger's "composed film" is a delight, if only for its artful visuals and dance sequences.
